When people think of a luxury car, they think of a fully loaded vehicle with the most state-of-the-art technology that can easily be controlled with the touch of a button. But it might be surprising to know that might not be the case.
Consumer Reports (CR) recently surveyed over 73,000 members about their cars’ infotainment system. The survey found that the cars with the lowest satisfaction ratings were all luxury brands: in order, they were Acura, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. Lexus owners said the lack of a touchscreen and reliance on using controls kept them from focusing on the road. Meanwhile, the lower-priced models, especially Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Ford and General Motors (GM), received the highest marks.
Jake Fisher, CR’s senior director of auto testing, said, “Cars from luxury brands and those with the latest technology are often the most difficult to use.” He also said that the infotainment systems in the FCA, Ford and GM models have easy-to-read icons and user-friendly controls, making it easier to master.
The latest technology is always changing and doesn’t always last. There will come a time when the Bluetooth doesn’t work, the touchscreen goes out and your Android Auto or Apple CarPlay system will stop playing.
