The California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently finalized an agreement with a group of automakers to reduce emissions within the Golden State. Ford Motor Co., Volkswagen AG, Honda Motor Co. and BMW AG initially entered into an agreement with CARB in July 2019. Volvo Cars later joined in, also finalizing its agreement on August 17.
As part of the deal, the five companies will have an extra year to comply with the Obama-era requirements of annual increases in fuel efficiency by 5%, for 2021 to 2026 model year cars and light trucks. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, the agreement means there will be a 3.7% improvement in fuel economy from 2022 to 2026.
Currently, 13 states, including New York, follow California’s emission standards. New York began implementing greenhouse gas regulations for cars in 2009, the same year California did.
