How Some Mechanics Scam Vehicle Owners

Some mechanics will trick unsuspecting car owners into getting unnecessary and expensive repairs done to their car. These mechanics will “discover” a “problem” somewhere and convince the customer that it needs to be fixed now.

Here are some examples of how mechanics scam their customers:

Some car dealerships use safety recalls as a way for them to perform additional unnecessary work on your car, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Many car owners have reported that these dealerships refused to fix the recall unless they performed additional, needless repairs, which cost the owner more money.
Mechanics will use confusing industry terms in an attempt to trick you into thinking your car has a problem.
Mechanics may use counterfeit or used parts, then charge you for the price of a new part. This bogus part may damage your car. Before long, you’ll be back in the shop with more repairs.
You also want to be aware of padded charges. This is where mechanics will offer additional unnecessary repairs that will show up on your final bill, jacking up the price. Repair shops may also leave the estimate amount blank on the bill and fill in the amount once you signed off on it.
